The Curse Keeper by Denise Grover Swank | Interview | Book Review

ABOUT THE CURSE KEEPERS:

The wall between our world and that of vengeful spirits has protected humanity for more than 400 years. It’s about to come crashing down.
Ellie Lancaster has lived her whole life by the site of the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Virginia settlement that vanished without a trace around 1590. Only the descendants of the two men who banished the spirits of an enemy tribe from the material realm know what really happened to the colony. Ellie is one of those descendants—a Curse Keeper. Her father took pains to teach her what he knew of the curse and the responsibilities of its guardians. He taught her that if the two Curse Keepers ever meet, the curse will be lifted, the gate will open, and the raging Native American spirits will be unleashed to seek their revenge.

Despite her father’s seriousness, Ellie has always taken the legend for a harmless fairy tale. Until she meets the darkly handsome, but downright infuriating, Collin Dailey and realizes everything she was told is true. For when they meet, it’s like the air is sucked from the room. Collin’s presence is electrifying… and it’s not just attraction Ellie feels, but the inexorable pull toward her destiny. The prophecy is real, and now Ellie and Collin must battle supernatural forces and their loathing—and passion—for each other to set things right.

The Curse Keepers are all that stand between the world and its destruction.

Interview:
I had the amazing opportunity to ask Denise some questions and she was kind enough to answer all of my randomness. So, get ready and find some new dirt on one of our Authors.

Are you more of an introvert or extrovert?
I'm an introvert, but I have no problem hanging out with people at parties and booksignings. In fact, I love them. But when it's all done, I need some alone time to recharge.

Do you have a book boyfriend and if so, who is it?
This is going to sound really bad, but it's Mason Deveraux from my Rose Gardner series. I know. I know. I'm supposed to pick another author's character, but I love him.  Like lovehim. I've joked that I'll be the first author to write fan fiction of her own characters. My developmental knows this and approves since she has her own crush on him.

Favorite drink while working?
Coffee My love affair with Starbucks and my Keurig is legendary.

Cliffhangers or no cliffhangers? (do you like to use them)
Yes, guilty as charged although I try to wrap up the pieces of that book. But a series usually has an ongoing issue(s) that carry over from book to book.

Music/TV or Silence? What are you listening to while your write?
Silence drives me batty. And TV distracts me. I love my iTunes account and my Bose headphones.

What is your guiltiest pleasure? No judging here on Chapter Break.
Um... This makes me realize I live a very sad life. LOL The worst thing I can come up with is watching the Showtime series, The Masters of Sex. And then I wait until after my children have been in bed for hours before I turn it on.

What is the best best advice you ever received?
Life your life for yourself, not other people's expectations. Still, it's not always easy advice to follow.

What is one thing you do better at than most?
Balancing my business mind and my creative mind.

What is one thing that you do worse at than most?
Cooking my children dinner. I literally forget until it's too late and we have to get take out. I'm constantly trying to figure out a solution to this.

Last words or words of encouragement? Anything else we would love to know?
I know there's a million books out there to read, so I'm always honored when a new reader decides to read one of mine. Thank you!

Book Review:
Denise did a ton of research for this book on some ancient Indian culture and I learned quite a bit in an interesting way. Much of the story that is told in The Curse Keepers has been lost throughout history and there isn't much information out there. Of course Denise adds her personal spin to the lore, but you can find the thread of the culture within the story.
For my strictly romance readers out there, this might not be the book for you. The story is not focused on the couple and there isn't angst as to why they can't be together. Yes, there is some romance in it, but it takes a secondary role, similar to the third book in The Hunger Games-maybe slightly more.
I felt for the romance aspect that it was lacking, but I took into consideration that the main topic of the book was closing the gate, not whether Collin and Ellie get together.
I really liked the paranormal aspect to the book. The research for the story was very well-rounded and I could tell the author knew exactly where she wanted to go with it. An ancient city that disappears over 400 years ago suddenly appears and the whole town goes insane. There is no logical explanation except for the storm, birds are dead everywhere and now bodies are turning up. Will Collin and Ellie be able to carry out the sacred ritual and close the gate before all hell (literally) breaks loose? 3 stars.

ABOUT Denise Grover Swank:

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became a nomadic gypsy, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period.  Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.)  Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks.  She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.
